A large number of people resort to painkillers when it is time to find migraine relief, but there are a lot of natural strategies that can be every bit as successful, and sometimes more successful, for reducing pain. In addition to being safe, acupressure might be an effective way to lessen the pain without turning to costly and potentially dangerous pain medicine.
Acupressure is a type of massage which uses finger, thumb, or palm force on particular areas of the body to promote healing, reduce pain symptoms, stimulate and regulate bodily functions, and produce other useful consequences. Acupressure concentrates on the same bodily parts that acupuncture does, but it uses pressure as a substitute for of needles.
Using the acupressure areas listed below will require us to make use of the pads of our thumbs and/or fingers to apply the force. When applying pressure you need to begin by pressing directly and gently on a point and then progressively escalating the total amount of force until youve reached an amount that is firm, but not painful. By no means put enough pressure on any specific area that can trigger an increased amount of pain, specifically within the more delicate points as in the face and head. Typically, it would be best to maintain the force on each location until some relief from pain is felt, but generally not more than one minute.
Migraine pain can often be helped by stimulating a number of acupressure points. Since everybody is different, a point that can help one person may not help someone else. For that reason it is good to test out different areas and discover the areas that are most beneficial for you. Once you understand which points work for you personally, youll be able to then perform the same routine on the same acupressure points each time you suffer with a migraine headache.
The first acupressure point we are going to talk about is located within the fleshy pad of the hand between the index finger and thumb. Squeeze this space with your index finger and thumb of the other hand and keep the force on the area until a reduction of pain has occurred or one minute has ticked by. Once you are through with the first hand, duplicate the method with the opposite hand.
Another acupressure point for migraine pain is located at the bottom of the skull on the top section of the neck. There are a couple of acupressure points here, on both sides. To determine these areas, start at the middle of the neck at the base of the skull and move approximately one or two inches to either side. Youll find an indentation on either side of the neck slightly below the skull where pressure will be applied with your thumbs.
A third point that has shown good results for decreasing migraine headache pain is within the top middle of the head. This point is located in the following manner: Draw an imaginary line from directly in front of one ear, over the top middle of the head, and downward to a point directly in front of the other ear. Next, start at the middle of the brow and draw another imaginary line directly up to top the middle of the head. The place where these two imaginary lines meet on top of the head is another location. By applying firm and direct pressure on acupressure points its often possible to relieve the pain symptoms of a migraine headache.
